鹹酥雞

I did get to enjoy one other favourite food while in Taiwan and that is a salty crispy chicken.  This place did start as a street vendor and over the years due to its popularity has grown into a franchised "street" vendor.  I think its main popularity is still in Taichung where it originated but you can also find them in the capital city, Taipei.

They are available in a small or large bag option - I highly recommend the large bag or you will live to regret it .For those who like spicy food, chilli spices can also be added on top of the original spices.

The chicken are cut into larger bite size pieces, coated in some secret spiced batter, quickly deep fried and then saturated in cloud of powdered white pepper and salt.  I'm not a big chili eater and the white pepper is already quite fiery so I usually just get a little bit of chilli  to taste.  I don't have the foggiest idea of what the special spice blend is but as you bite into the chicken you get the first blast of salt on the surface, then the gentle sweetness of the tender chicken (just watch out for some bones) followed by a chaser of various spices that are sweet and hot having a party in your mouth.  A sensation that strangely leaves you wanting for more.
